In Ecology

  • In a study performed by Australian botanists three different kinds of function of phlorotannins were suggested during wound-healing of damaged tissue of brown algae: wound-sealing, structural wound-healing, and defense.

    1. Wound Sealing: The presence of phlorotannins at the wound surface in the early stage of wounding corresponds to a sealing function of phlorotannins and would also help to prevent microbial attack.
    2. Wound Healing: The deposition of phlorotannins into cell walls, including into new cross walls, contributes to structural strengthening during wound-healing.
    3. Defense: Phlorotannins function as a chemical defense agent that deters herbivores from further damaging and prevents infection by microbes such as bacteria or fungi.

Bioactivity

So far, hundreds of scientific studies on MOP have revealed a wide spectrum of its bioactivity in the areas such as allergy, antioxidation, brain, cancer, circulation, detoxification, inflammation/pain/arthritis, metabolic syndromes, microbiology, skin and others.
